Russia Investigates Alleged Abuse Of Soldiers By Military Police In Viral Video

Russian authorities are investigating viral footage showing a military policeman brutally beating and stunning soldiers in southern Siberia.

Russian authorities have launched an investigation following the circulation of shocking video footage showing a man in military police uniform brutally beating and using a stun gun on contract soldiers.

The footage, widely shared on social media via Telegram, has drawn significant attention and criticism.

The videos, time-stamped January 16, 2025, reportedly show incidents at a military unit in Kyzyl, located in the southern Siberian region of Tuva. In one clip, a man dressed in a Russian military police uniform is seen repeatedly striking a soldier with a baton, forcing him to the ground, and using an electric shock gun on him while shouting expletives. A second clip depicts another soldier, who uses a walking stick, being subjected to similar violent treatment as the assailant demands that he undress.

The exact reason for the violent behaviour remains unclear. Russian war correspondents reported that the victims were wounded soldiers recently discharged from hospital and preparing to return to the front lines in Ukraine.

Tuva’s regional government confirmed the incident in a statement on its official website. “On January 16, 2025, cases of ill-treatment of contract soldiers were recorded in military unit No. 55115, including beatings and the use of electric shock guns before they were sent to the SVO,” the statement said. The acronym “SVO” refers to Russia’s “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine.

Authorities have identified the individuals involved and initiated a pre-investigation process. “The perpetrators have been identified, a pre-investigation check is being conducted against them, and an assessment of the circumstances of the incident will be given in accordance with the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, and the perpetrators will be punished,” the regional government assured.

As the footage sparked widespread outrage, Russia’s Ministry of Defence has not issued any comment on the matter. Calls for accountability and improved treatment of soldiers have intensified, with many demanding transparency in the investigation.
