Russia’s Defence Ministry announced on Friday that it is conducting drills involving Yars mobile nuclear missile launchers, marking a continuation of its recent nuclear readiness activities. This comes less than a month after Russia conducted tactical nuclear weapons deployment exercises with its ally Belarus.
The ministry detailed that Yars missile launcher crews in at least two different regions will move over 100 kilometers (62 miles) and practice camouflage and deployment techniques. A video released by the ministry shows a mobile launcher maneuvering along forest roads and taking up position before being covered in camouflage netting by troops.
“Similar exercises will be held by other missile units in the near future,” the defence ministry stated, indicating ongoing preparations and training exercises across various units.
In June, Russia conducted tactical nuclear weapons drills with Belarus, citing perceived threats from Western powers. During these exercises, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Moscow had no need to use nuclear weapons to secure victory in Ukraine but did not rule out potential changes to the country’s nuclear doctrine.
