Russia And Indonesia Conduct Joint Naval Exercises In Java Sea

Russian and Indonesian naval forces conducted their first joint naval exercises in the Java Sea, focusing on counter-terrorism tactics and defense against unmanned maritime threats. According to Russia’s RIA news agency, the drills simulated the liberation of a vessel captured by terrorists and engaged in exercises to combat unmanned boats, utilising live-fire from automatic artillery and small arms.

This week-long exercise aligns with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s commitment to strengthening defense ties with Russia. The collaboration reflects Jakarta’s longstanding non-aligned foreign policy, which encourages cooperation with a range of global partners.

During the exercise, crews practiced advanced maneuvers, coordinated communications, and inspected suspicious vessels. Helicopters were deployed to enhance the joint operational capacity of both navies, with Russia’s Pacific Fleet and Indonesia’s naval forces working closely together.

The Russian fleet was represented by the corvettes “Gromkiy”, “Rezkiy”, “Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov”, and the medium sea tanker “Pechenga”. Indonesia’s frigate “I Gusti Ngurah Rai” and corvette “Frans Kaisiepo” joined the exercises, reinforcing Indonesia’s strategic approach to defense through collaborative engagements in the Indo-Pacific region.
