The pool of candidates to join Kamala Harris, the expected Democratic US presidential nominee, narrowed on Monday as North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer withdrew from consideration.
This critical decision has become prominent since Harris emerged as the leading Democratic candidate for the November election, following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race just over a week ago.
Vice presidential picks often help balance a presidential ticket to attract a broader range of voters, and Harris is considering mostly white, male options.
Cooper stepped back from being a potential vice presidential nominee, stating on Monday: “I was honoured to be considered for this role, but it’s not the right time for North Carolina or me to join a national ticket.”
Whitmer also clarified on “CBS Mornings” that she was “not involved in the vetting” process for Harris’ vice presidential choice.
“I’ve informed everyone, including Michiganders, that I will remain as governor until the end of my term in 2026,” Whitmer said.
Harris took a break from her campaign over the weekend to have private discussions with several candidates, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, according to two sources familiar with these conversations.
Other contenders being considered include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, U.S. Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
Candidates have been appearing on national television to highlight their suitability for the role.
Buttigieg, regarded as a long shot by some of his supporters, discussed the opportunity privately with Harris and also spoke with donors from his 2020 presidential campaign, expressing his interest while respecting the process, according to two sources.
