Iconic Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, celebrated for his bold animal prints and innovative textile designs, has passed away at the age of 83.

The fashion house bearing his name confirmed his death on Instagram, although no further details were provided.

According to reports from the Italian news agency ANSA, Cavalli died at his home in Florence following a prolonged illness.

Born on November 15, 1940, in Florence, the city renowned for its exquisite leatherwork, Cavalli embarked on his journey in the fashion world in the 1970s. He established his eponymous fashion brand, quickly gaining recognition for his distinctive designs that adorned celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez.

Fausto Puglisi, creative director of Roberto Cavalli, paid tribute to the late designer, describing him as “a beacon of inspiration for others.” Puglisi expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with Cavalli, stating that working with him was “the greatest honour” of his career.

Cavalli’s creative vision extended beyond traditional boundaries, evident in his pioneering work in leather printing. He invented and patented an innovative leather printing process, revolutionising the fashion industry.

His creations, ranging from animal prints to hippie dresses, sand-blasted jeans, and patchwork denim, showcased his eclectic style and daring experimentation.

In 2005, Cavalli was commissioned to modernise the iconic Playboy Bunnies’ uniforms, introducing a version adorned with his signature leopard print.

When asked about his inspiration for incorporating animal prints into his designs, Cavalli expressed admiration for nature’s beauty, stating, “I like everything that is of nature.”

He further said, “I started to appreciate that even fish have a fantastic coloured ‘dress’, so does the snake, and the tiger. I start[ed] to understand that God is really the best designer, so I started to copy God.”

Tributes poured in from across the fashion industry, with Giorgio Armani, founder of Armani, honouring Cavalli’s artistic legacy. Armani praised Cavalli as a “true artist,” noting his “Tuscan verve” and his ability to translate fantasy into captivating fashion pieces.
