World-renowned Afrobeats artist, Rema, and America’s Selena Gomez, became the first winners ever of the annual MTV Video Music Awards newly installed category for Best Afrobeats.
The Duo won the category for their head-bopping song, “Calm Down” at the awards ceremony held in Newmark, New Jersey in the US on Tuesday.
The award is the first of its kind as organisers honored the fast-evolving Afrobeats music style by unveiling the category in its 2023 edition.
The song spent more than 50 weeks at the top of Billboard’s U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart before reaching its Billboard Hot 100 peak at No. 3 in June.
“Calm Down” has joined Spotify’s Billions Club, an accolade given to songs with more than a billion streams, becoming the first song from an African artist, according to a statement released on Sunday by the streaming service.
The song was nominated alongside Burna Boy’s ‘It’s Plenty,’ Davido feat Musa Key’s ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ Wizkid feat Ayrra Starr’s ‘2 Sugar,’ and Fireboy DML’s ‘Bandana featuring Asake.
