Rangers have been crowned Scottish champions for the first time in a decade after Celtic were held to a 0-0 draw at Dundee United on Sunday.
Steven Gerrard’s men had beaten St. Mirren 3-0 at Ibrox on Saturday to go 21 points clear at the top, meaning only a Celtic win could have prolonged their wait to secure the title.
However, the defending champions could not find a way to break the deadlock at Tannadice, allowing their Old Firm rivals to celebrate and handing Gerrard the first major trophy of his managerial career.
Ultimately, the Liverpool legend’s side were left 20 points clear with six games remaining and will go into the Old Firm clash at Celtic Park on March 21 as champions for the 55th time – a world record for domestic league title wins.
Rangers were consigned to Scotland’s fourth tier back in 2012 after financial collapse, but have rebuilt steadily – and have now denied Celtic a record-breaking 10th consecutive top-flight crown.
Former Liverpool and England midfielder Gerrard took the Rangers helm in 2018, and has now completed a remarkable end to Celtic’s prior dominance.
As was the case on Saturday, Rangers fans have gathered outside Ibrox to celebrate the win, in breach of coronavirus regulations.
