President Vladimir Putin has condemned Ukraine for what he describes as “another major provocation” after a reported incursion by Ukrainian troops into Russia’s Kursk region.
According to Russian defense officials, around 300 Ukrainian soldiers, supported by 11 tanks and over 20 armored combat vehicles, crossed the border near the town of Sudzha on Tuesday, roughly 10 kilometers from the frontline.
This escalation has led to ongoing fighting and significant civilian displacement, with thousands leaving their homes in the region.
Putin has accused Ukrainian forces of indiscriminately targeting civilian areas, with reports of shelling and air attacks that have killed three civilians and wounded 24 others, including six children.
The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed it successfully halted Ukrainian advances into deeper Russian territory and destroyed several Ukrainian drones overnight.
Meanwhile, local authorities in Kursk have urged residents to limit their movements and canceled public events due to continued air alerts.
As tensions rise, Kyiv has yet to comment on the situation, while Ukrainian military sources suggest the incursion was a preventative measure amidst the gathering of Russian troops near the border.
