The Princess of Wales, Catherine, made an unexpected appearance alongside the Prince of Wales during a visit to Southport, marking her first public engagement since completing chemotherapy. The couple visited the seaside town to meet privately with the bereaved families of three children who tragically lost their lives in a knife attack in July.
Royal sources reveal that Catherine’s decision to join Prince William was motivated by her desire to show “support, empathy, and compassion to the local community” as it continues to heal. The royal visit, initially intended to be a low-key event, was Catherine’s first major public appearance since revealing her cancer diagnosis earlier this year.
During the visit, the royal couple met with emergency responders who were at the scene of the horrific attack. Describing the first responders as “heroes,” Prince William acknowledged their crucial role in helping the community cope with the tragedy. The Princess, dressed in a long brown autumnal coat, spoke to emergency workers, expressing gratitude for their support during the town’s darkest days.
The attack on 29 July 2024 left three children—Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9—dead. Ten others, eight of whom were children, were injured. The suspect, Axel Rudakubana, 17, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.
Prince William and Catherine spent 90 minutes with the families of the three children, offering condolences and comfort. They also conveyed the families’ gratitude to the emergency responders during a meeting at Southport Community Centre. Catherine, in an emotional address to the responders, thanked them for their role in supporting the grieving families: “On behalf of them, thank you.”
The visit underscored the couple’s ongoing commitment to mental health awareness. They urged the emergency workers to take care of their own well-being, emphasising the importance of self-care in the aftermath of such traumatic events. “Please make sure you look after yourselves, please take your time, don’t rush back to work,” Prince William advised, echoing the couple’s longstanding campaign for mental health awareness.
The royal couple also made a personal donation through their charity to a fund that provides both physical and psychological support for police officers and ambulance staff affected by the attack and the riots that followed. The gesture was aimed at helping those who have been on the frontlines to recover, both physically and emotionally.
Catherine’s return to royal duties is being managed carefully, with Kensington Palace cautioning that her future appearances may remain flexible due to her health. While she has attended meetings for her early years campaign in recent weeks, this visit to Southport marked her most significant return to public engagements.
In making this visit, the Prince and Princess of Wales aimed to assure the Southport community that they have not been forgotten, showing that even in the aftermath of such a devastating tragedy, their loss is being recognised and supported at the highest level.
