UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has paid tribute to his younger brother, Nick, who passed away on Boxing Day at the age of 60 after battling cancer.
In a heartfelt statement, Starmer described Nick as “a wonderful man” who faced life’s challenges with “courage and good humour.” He added, “We will miss him very much.”
The Labour leader had planned to travel on holiday but has decided to remain in the UK following the loss.
“I would like to thank all those who treated and took care of Nick,” Starmer said, expressing gratitude for the skill and compassion of the medical staff who supported his brother.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch extended her condolences, calling the news “particularly devastating at Christmas time” in a message shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Nick Starmer, who lived with learning disabilities caused by complications during birth, faced significant challenges throughout his life. Struggling to secure steady employment, he was often the subject of bullying during his school years, where he was unfairly labeled “thick” or “stupid.”
In a biography published earlier this year, Sir Keir Starmer reflected on his brother’s hardships and their contrasting life paths. “Nick was dealt a very different set of cards to me,” Starmer shared, noting his admiration for Nick’s resilience in the face of challenges.
Speaking at the Labour Party conference in September, Starmer recalled his father’s words of pride: “Your brother has achieved just as much as you, Keir.”
Nick Starmer’s life, marked by perseverance and the enduring support of his family, has been remembered with admiration and respect. His passing highlights the importance of compassion and understanding for those navigating life with additional challenges.
The prime minister, joined by friends and colleagues from across the political spectrum, mourns the loss of a beloved sibling whose legacy will live on through the love and memories of those who knew him.
