In a pointed statement, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga has challenged the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, to lead the upcoming protest organised by his supporters. This call to action comes amidst rising political tensions in Nigeria.
Onanuga said this in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday after Obi said that it is a constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to protest.
“Now that Peter Obi has come out to endorse the planned protest by his supporters, he should do what President Tinubu and former President Buhari did in the past, by coming out openly to lead the protesters. That is what leadership is about. Not playing the master puppeteer behind the scene. He should be in the forefront of the protest and help in curbing their possible excesses,” Onanuga stated.
Obi had however urged protesters to make sure that their protests remain legal and peaceful, so as to avoid violence in the country.
Onanuga had earlier accused Obi’s supporters of sponsoring the planned nationwide protests against Tinubu’s administration.
But in a swift reaction, the LP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said there was no truth in Onanuga’s allegation, describing the allegation as a figment of his imagination.
