President Weah Takes Slender Lead To Liberia’s Presidential Run-Off

For the second time within six years, Liberia’s Presidential contest will be settled in a run-off involving two familiar political rivals, sitting President George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and former vice-President Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party (UP).

With 99.6% result of the 10 October election processed by the National Electoral commission (NEC), none of the 20 candidates met the requirement for an outright victory.

Consequently, the run-off in early November will involve the two regular frontrunners – Weah, who scored 43.79% & Boakai, who polled 43.49% in the first round.

Weah prevailed in 2017, but can lightning strike twice?
