Liverpool were left frustrated by a host of missed chances as they drew 0-0 at Newcastle United to round off Premier League football in 2020.
Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were wasteful in front of goal as Jurgen Klopp’s champions drew their second game in a row, while Fabian Schar made a stunning last-ditch tackle to deny Sadio Mane late on as Karl Darlow starred in goal for the Magpies.
The result extends Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table to three points, but offers Manchester United the chance to go level with them at the top of the table should the Red Devils beat Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.
Klopp said after the game: “We found a lot of solutions in the game and created unbelievable chances. You have different draws and this one I’m not happy with the result but I am happy with the performance.
“They defended with all they had but still we were alone in front of the goal, we just couldn’t finish them off.
“I’ve watched a lot of football matches. You have to respect the result. I know the boys will finish off those situations if they get them again, and we will win football games.”
Klopp added: “The last thing I’m thinking about is our position in the table. It’s nice but it doesn’t mean anything at the moment.”
