A powerful typhoon named Shanshan has made landfall in Japan, causing significant destruction and claiming three lives so far. The typhoon hit Kagoshima prefecture on Kyushu island with winds reaching up to 252 km/h (157 mph). The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a rare “special warning” due to the severity of the storm, cautioning residents about potential landslides, flooding, and widespread damage.
Among the fatalities were a couple in their 70s and a man in his 30s from Gamagori, whose home was swept away before the typhoon made landfall. The other two members of the family were rescued after an intense overnight recovery effort.
The storm has already caused massive disruptions, including power outages affecting 255,000 homes, injuries to at least 39 people, and the suspension of flights and train services. Major companies like Toyota and Nissan have temporarily closed their factories due to safety concerns and supply chain disruptions.
With up to 600mm of rain expected in some areas, further evacuation advisories have been issued, affecting thousands of people across various regions. The JMA anticipates that Shanshan will continue to impact central and eastern Japan, including Tokyo, over the coming weekend.
This typhoon follows the earlier Typhoon Ampil and Tropical Storm Maria, highlighting a trend of more intense and longer-lasting storms due to climate change. The increased frequency and severity of these weather events are a growing concern for Japan and the broader region.
