A preliminary 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 60 miles off the coast of Ferndale in Humboldt County late Thursday morning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres at 10:44 a.m. local time.
The quake’s epicentre was located approximately 50 miles southwest of Eureka, California, in the Pacific Ocean.
The National Tsunami Warning Centre has issued tsunami warnings for parts of the California and Oregon coastline, urging residents in affected areas to “move away from coastal waters.”
While no damage or injuries have been reported, the quake caused significant disruptions. San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) temporarily halted all trains, including service through the underwater tunnel connecting San Francisco and Oakland.
The earthquake, which was felt as far south as San Francisco, caused a rolling motion lasting several seconds and was followed by smaller aftershocks.
The USGS reported that more than 1.3 million people were within range to feel the tremor, while over 5.3 million Californians are currently under a tsunami warning.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation for potential tsunami waves and additional aftershocks.
