Pope Francis has extended his congratulations to US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, delivering a traditional message of goodwill ahead of the presidential inauguration ceremony.
Despite past criticisms of Trump’s rhetoric on immigration, the pontiff expressed hopes for wisdom, strength, and protection for Trump as he prepares to assume the presidency again. The pontiff said he would pray that God grants Trump “wisdom, strength and protection” as he takes up the presidency again.
“It is my hope that under your leadership the American people will prosper and always strive to build a more just society, where there is no room for hatred, discrimination, or exclusion,” Francis wrote.
The pope’s message comes a day after he voiced strong opposition to Trump’s reported plan to intensify immigration enforcement. In an Italian television interview, Francis criticised the proposed actions, calling them a “disgrace” that unfairly targets migrants who “have nothing.”
Francis, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, has previously used forceful language to condemn Trump’s policies. During the 2016 election campaign, he questioned Trump’s faith, stating that his stance on immigration was “not Christian.”
Reports indicate that the incoming Trump administration is reconsidering plans for immigration raids in Chicago following widespread criticism. As Trump prepares to take office, the pope’s remarks signal a continued focus on advocating for justice, inclusion, and the protection of vulnerable populations.
