A group of Polish students who were detained in Nigeria have been freed, according to the Polish Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, Nigeria announced the arrest of seven Polish citizens for allegedly displaying Russian flags during anti-government demonstrations in Kano, a northern state.
In response to their detention, a Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson denied the claims, stating that the students were simply near the protest and not involved in waving the flags.
“The Polish students have been released and are currently in Kano,” the Polish Foreign Ministry stated on social media platform X. “We appreciate the efforts of everyone who helped secure their release.”
Since August 1, large-scale protests have erupted in Nigeria against President Bola Tinubu’s severe economic measures, which include partial removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, currency devaluation, and inflation reaching its highest in thirty years.
During some of these protests in northern regions, Russian flags were seen, reflecting concerns over growing Russian influence in West Africa.
