Petrol, Electricity Hike: FG to Discuss Palliative Plans with Labour Thursday

Abel Ejikeme

The Federal government says it has fixed Thursday, September 24, to meet with organised labour to unveil government’s palliative plans to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The move by the Nigerian government comes after threats by labour to proceed on indefinite strike and protest over the hike in prices of fuel and electricity tariffs.

Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Charles Akpan, who disclosed the meeting date, said the federal government’s delegation will be led by the Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige, and will he hold at the Banquet hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Last week’s meeting between the federal government and labour ended in a deadlock following government’s refusal to reverse increase in fuel price or offer palliatives to reduce the effect on workers.

Both NLC and TUC are now threatening to shut down activities in the country on September 28, if the federal government refuses to reverse the increase in fuel price and electricity tariff.

Labour says it will collaborate to execute the industrial action for maximum effect.
