The Presidential Organisation for Moral Renewal (POMR) has released a statement confirming that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, joined dignitaries from around the world in Vatican City on Wednesday to pay his final respects to the late Pope Francis.
The solemn ceremony, held at St. Peter’s Basilica, marked the lying in state of the beloved Catholic leader, who passed away on April 21.
Obi, a Papal Knight of the Catholic Church, stood alongside Nigeria’s Cardinal Francis Arinze, a 93-year-old Vatican veteran, in a moment of reflection and tribute to the life and legacy of the Pontiff. The event drew thousands of mourners, from global faith leaders to political figures, all united in honouring a man widely regarded as a moral compass for the modern world.
In a heartfelt message posted on his X handle, Obi described Pope Francis as “a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference.” Reflecting on the Pope’s life and teachings, he noted, “He lived for others, spoke for the voiceless, and reminded us all that leadership must be about lifting others, not self-exaltation.”
Obi shared personal memories of the Pope, having met him on three occasions. He recounted how those encounters shaped his understanding of ethical leadership and human dignity. “His humility was infectious, his vision deeply human,” Obi wrote, recalling the late Pontiff’s influence on his own life, particularly through his involvement with Scholars Occultantes—an international circle of thinkers founded by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop.
Calling on African political, religious, and community leaders to reflect on the Pope’s legacy, Obi urged them to lead with conscience and compassion. “Let this moment not just be one of mourning, but a call to lead with conscience, walk with the people, and govern with love,” he stated.
The press statement concluded with a prayer: “May Pope Francis’ soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy live on in all who seek to serve humanity selflessly.”
Pope Francis’ passing has prompted tributes from around the globe, with many lauding his commitment to justice, peace, and the upliftment of the poor and marginalised.
