Labour Party presidential candidate, in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, on Wednesday, appealed to privileged Nigerians, to invest in education and the health sector, as well as help fund the drilling of 200,000 thousand boreholes across the country, Peter Obi made the appeal at a press briefing in Abuja.
Peter Obi also responded to critics who have accused him of not building any school while he was governor of Anambra State, stating that individuals who made such claims have not read his manifesto. Peter Obi argued, that Anambra state was ranked 26th in the nation when he became governor, with shuttered schools and a broken educational system, but that by the time he left office, Anambra State had risen to the top.
The Governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo Olu, on Wednesday, said that he has fulfilled his promise to stand by the vulnerable, amid the global economic hardship. The governor made the remarks before a crowd of excited community leaders, workers and other Lagosians, at the public presentation of ‘Eko Cares’, an intervention program targeting five thousand households to address poverty in Lagos. In the meantime, the Lagos State Governor, on Wednesday, received Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya, who broke the Guinness World record for the longest chess marathon in Times Square, New York, with a duration of 60 hours.
The 29 year old chess player, who is the founder of ‘Chess in Slums Africa’, achieved the feat on Saturday April 20th. Tunde said he hopes to empower illiterate children across Africa through the feat. Governor Sanwo-Olu praised Onakoya’s dedication and passion for chess. In a post on instagram, the Governor wrote “His journey embodies the spirit of Lagos-resilient, ambitious, and driven to succeed. Adding, that “As we celebrate his achievements, we are inspired by his vision for empowering our children and youth. Together with Tunde and the transformative power of Chess, we’ll work towards a future where every child in Lagos has the opportunity to realize their full potential. Onakoya was given a heroic welcome to Nigeria on Wednesday with a heartwarming reception at the airport in lagos.
Following the recent clamp down of individuals alleged to be complicit in financial crimes, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday, said that the agency is scheduled to arraign the former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, in court next week. Hadi Sirika was invited and grilled by EFCC operatives on Tuesday, over alleged fraudulent contracts and money laundering to the tune of over N8 billion Naira.
Sirika is said to have awarded the contracts to his brother Abubakar Sirika, who is a deputy director at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources. A video showing supporters of the embattled former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello performing rituals to prevent him from being arrested by EFCC operatives has made the rounds on social media.
Controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye popularly known as Bobrisky, has filed a notice of appeal challenging his conviction on a four-count charge of Naira abuse. In his notice of appeal, Counsel to Okuneye, prayed the Court to set aside the maximum sentence, adding that the trial court imposed the maximum sentence on his client who had no previous criminal record of conviction.
The lawyer is asking the court to replace the sentence with an option of a N50,000 Naira fine on each of the counts. As the EFCC intensifies its efforts to crack down on citizens abusing the Naira, videos showing new methods which have been devised to maintain the tradition of spraying Naira at social events has made rounds on social media.
