In the United States, hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered in cities across the country over the weekend, to denounce President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk in what has been described as the largest nationwide show of opposition since the president took office in January.

The protest, tagged “Hands Off”was organized by a pro-democracy movement in response to what they call a hostile takeover and an attack on American rights and freedoms.

The demonstration which comes just days after Trump’s announcement to impose ‘import tariffs’ on many countries globally, were held at federal buildings, state capitols, congressional offices, Social Security headquarters, parks, and city halls across Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C.

Award-winning writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, during an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, said that she refuses to give in to despair as attacks on diversity continue in the United States.

Chimamanda expressed optimism, saying that “what is broken will be made whole again.”

The Nigeria Police Force has warned organizers of a planned nationwide protest scheduled for today, April 7th, to shelve the protest, describing it as ill-timed and mischievous.

The police believe the protest is a deliberate attempt to tarnish their image and that of the nation, especially with international dignitaries present for the National Police Day celebration.

In a statement, the police advised the organisers to engage in dialogue with the government.

The Nigerian Correctional Service, Bayelsa state command, has refuted allegations of illegally detaining 15 former domestic staff of former first lady, Patience Jonathan, at the Okaka Custodial Centre since 2019.

Reports claim the workers were detained over the alleged theft of valuables worth N200 million and faced multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and burglary.

In a statement on Sunday, the custodial centre’s spokesperson, dismissed the claims as unfounded and aimed at tarnishing the service’s image.

The spokesperson emphasized that the inmates have been treated humanely, and that their fundamental rights have been respected, adding that they were remanded with valid court warrants.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed his admiration for the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, stating that it inspires thoughts of heaven.

Umahi made the comment on the Arise Morning Show on Sunday, as he provided updates on the project, mentioning that 30 km of the 750 km highway’s first section, will be ready for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu on May 25th, 2025.
