Following the suspension of the People’s Democratic Party’s National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu, by the Executive Committee of the PDP in Igyorov Ward of Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday and passing a vote of no confidence on him for anti- party activities.
The Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, during an interview with Channels Television on Monday in reaction to Ayu’s suspension says he supports the move as Ayu played a major role in the failure of the party in the just concluded elections.
He further emphasized that if Ayu had left before the election, they would have also attributed the failure of the party to him.
Wike opined that It is only in Nigeria that someone who has failed woefully and without any conscience would still like to occupy the position of power.
He stresses that in advanced countries, leaders of political parties don’t need to be told to “turn in the towel” when they fail.
Wike reiterated that Ayu ought to have left the office of the National Chairman of the PDP, although people thought they were pushing for Ayu to leave because of their agenda to make the party fail.
He thereafter highlighted that Ayu remained the Chairman of the party and the PDP didn’t win, he also said Ayu lost his position as National Chairman, he lost his ward as national chairman, lost his local government as national chairman of the party and also lost in the state gubernatorial election.
Wike has been at loggerheads with Ayu since the presidential primary election of the PDP. As a precondition for resolving the rift, Wike and his allies demanded that Ayu step down as national chairman of the party.
The crisis remained unsolved as the major opposition party went into the general election.
Ayu’s suspension letter dated March 24 was signed by 12 executive members of Igyorov ward, Gboko LGA of Benue, and they alleged that he did not vote in the March 18 governorship and state assembly elections.
