South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, acclaimed for his role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” has been discovered dead at 48 in a car in Seoul’s main park. Authorities confirmed the tragic incident on Wednesday, leaving fans and the entertainment industry in shock.
While the circumstances surrounding Lee’s death remain unclear, police received a report suggesting he left home after leaving a note. Lee had been under investigation for alleged drug use since October, with suspicions arising from an incident at a Seoul bar where he claimed to have unknowingly taken illicit drugs provided by an employee.
Despite negative or inconclusive results from his drug tests, the investigation continued, causing significant damage to Lee’s reputation. His agency, HODU&U Entertainment, expressed deep sorrow and urged against spreading false information, emphasizing the need for fairness in remembering Lee’s legacy.
Lee Sun-kyun, married to actress Jeon Hye-jin with two sons, had a prolific career spanning over two decades. His breakthrough role in “Parasite” earned international acclaim, contributing to the film’s historic four Oscars in 2020.
The drug investigation led to repercussions in Lee’s professional life, as he was dropped from the TV series “No Way Out.” Drug offenses, especially involving marijuana, are treated as serious crimes in South Korea, with prison sentences of up to five years.
President Yoon Suk Yeol’s commitment to a drug crackdown has expanded the country’s drug crimes department. The recent case of K-pop star G-Dragon being cleared contrasts with actor Yoo Ah-in currently standing trial for drug use.
As South Korea grapples with a heightened focus on drug-related issues, Lee Sun-kyun’s untimely death adds a somber chapter to the nation’s entertainment landscape.
