A series of earthquakes struck Istanbul on Tuesday, sending shockwaves across Turkey’s largest city and sparking widespread panic. The strongest of the tremors registered a magnitude of 6.2, according to local seismic authorities.
The quakes were powerful enough to be felt in the Turkish capital, located approximately 275 miles away, prompting residents in both cities to flee buildings in fear. Despite the intensity of the tremors, Turkish officials reported no significant damage or casualties as of Tuesday evening.
The tremors have revived long-standing fears among Istanbul residents, with scientists having warned for years that the city lies near a major fault line and is vulnerable to a potentially devastating earthquake.
