Over 130 Stranded In Tibet After Torrential Rains Cause Landslides and Floods

More than 130 people, including tourists, have been trapped in Tibet near China’s rugged Himalayan border with Nepal after relentless rains triggered landslides and floods, severing road links, according to Chinese state media.

Continuous rainfall since Sunday has washed away or blocked many sections of a major highway leading to the remote Tibetan town of Zhentang. Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters (6,562 feet), Zhentang has been cut off due to the extreme weather conditions, leaving many stranded.

Rescue operations have successfully evacuated 342 people to other towns, yet over 130 individuals remain trapped in the vicinity of Zhentang. State media reports cite blocked roads, ongoing rains, and “a lack of physical strength” due to the long distances involved as significant challenges to further evacuations.

The adverse weather is expected to persist, with storms forecasted to continue through Thursday, adding another layer of difficulty to the rescue efforts. Chinese state media has warned that these conditions will further complicate the ongoing rescue operations.
