Outrage in India has been triggered by a video showing two women being paraded nude by a crowd in the violent northeastern state of Manipur.
In addition to arresting a man, the police said they have opened a case of gang rape and will be holding other suspects shortly.
As a result of legislators’ demands for a discussion on the matter, the monsoon session of parliament was interrupted on Thursday.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, stated that the incident had “shamed India” and that “no guilty will be spared.” Breaking his silence on the ongoing violence in Manipur, over two months after it began, he said, “I assure the nation, the law will take its course with all its might. What happened with the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven.”
The attack was described as “unacceptable” and the court was “deeply disturbed over the video,” according to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who also voiced worry over it. The chief judge warned that the government saying, “we will take action if you don’t” and ordered them to inform the court of the actions being taken against the accused.
Although the police claim the attack on the ladies happened on May 4, the video that went viral on social media on Thursday brought the incident to national attention. The federal government has requested that all social media networks remove the video.
Manipur’s ethnic hostilities between the Meitei and Kuki groups began in May, and since then, at least 130 people have been killed and 60,000 have been rendered homeless.
On Wednesday, several people posted the two women’s horrifying footage on social media. A group of men pull them and prod them before pushing them into a field in the video.
In astatement, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) claimed that women from the Kuki-Zo tribal tribe had been the victims of crimes carried out at a hamlet in the Kangpokpi area. The ladies were also said to be the victims of gang rapes.
