Former Ghana international and Borussia Dortmund talent coach Otto Addo is set to assume the role of head coach for the Black Stars on a 34-month contract, the club announced on Friday.
Addo, who represented Ghana from 1999 to 2006, will return to the position he previously held during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, after which he departed to take on a permanent role at Borussia Dortmund.
Ghana has been without a head coach since the departure of Chris Hughton in the middle of the Africa Cup of Nations in January, during which the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage.
Borussia Dortmund confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Borussia Dortmund and talent coach Otto Addo will part ways in the summer as he embarks on his new role as coach for the Ghanaian national team. We wish him nothing but the best as he embraces this exciting new chapter in his career!”
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) also released a statement, affirming Addo’s appointment: “Otto was exceptional in the interview process and was rated highly by the search committee, hence the decision.
“There were some brilliant individuals among the coaches who applied for the job, so the committee took the pain to interview a chunk of them to pick their thoughts on their intentions to transform the team within a short period of time due to our peculiar situation.
“The committee was overly satisfied with Otto’s performance for which reason he was recommended to the Executive Council for approval.”
Addo, born in Germany, boasts an extensive career with Borussia Dortmund, having played for the club for six seasons concurrent with his time representing Ghana. Additionally, he has had stints with Hannover, Mainz, and VfL Hamburg, retiring from professional football in 2008.
