Professor Chinwe Obuaku, a consultant to the Osun State Government on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, announced, during the 11th German-Nigerian Business Forum, that a climate action plan is underway for Osun State. This initiative aims to establish a framework for various sectors to implement environmentally friendly practices.
Obuaku delivered her comments at the 11th German-Nigerian Business Forum on October 7, 2024, at the Lagos Continental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event aimed to promote trade and investment opportunities between Germany and Nigeria, featuring discussions on key sectors such as agribusiness, food processing, renewable energy, energy efficiency, construction, and technical vocational education and training (TVET).
Obuaku emphasised a “policy framework that automatically places a drive towards a green economy on the front burner of public discourse,” stating that the framework aims to prioritize sustainable practices to comprehensively tackle the climate crisis and reduce its adverse effects.
She stated that discussions are underway with potential partners to enhance energy access in rural areas using solar power and green hydrogen, and “setting an agenda for gradual adoption of solar power as alternative energy sources.”
“Osun state is fully committed to championing sustainable initiatives that promote renewable energy, responsible resource management, and eco-friendly practices across all sectors,” she added.
She reinforced her message by highlighting that the state is developing two distinct policies and legal frameworks. One is a state electricity market bill aimed at establishing renewable energy as a cornerstone for a sustainable economy. Additionally, the state is advancing a comprehensive climate agenda, with climate offices already established.
“Our focus is to create a sustainable energy landscape that supports economic development while ensuring that we leave a habitable planet for our children,” she stated rounding up her statement.
Obuaku emphasized the significance of partnerships and collaborations in reaching these objectives, highlighting the annual German-Nigerian Business Conference as a key platform for strengthening effective bilateral relations.
