One Dead After Small Plane Crashes in Muddy Field Near New York-Massachusetts Border

A small plane crashed in Copake, New York, killing one, with emergency response hampered by mud and snowfall.

At least one person has died after a small aircraft carrying six people crashed on Saturday afternoon in Copake, a rural area around 50 miles south of Albany, New York, officials confirmed.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said the Mitsubishi MU-2B aircraft went down at 12:15 p.m. (1715 WAT) in a muddy field near the Massachusetts state line, while en route to Columbia County Airport, located near Hudson, New York.

It remains unclear whether the crash resulted in further injuries or fatalities, as authorities continue to assess the scene.

At a press conference, Columbia County Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore said emergency response efforts were facing significant challenges due to the weather and terrain.

“It’s in the middle of a field and it’s pretty muddy, so accessibility is difficult,” she stated.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to take over the investigation and provide more details on Sunday, according to both the FAA and the Sheriff’s Office.
