Omobayo Godwins Sworn In As New Edo State Deputy Governor

In a swift response to the impeachment of Comrade Philip Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday morning, Governor Godwin Obaseki swiftly appointed Omobayo Godwins as the new Deputy Governor of Edo State.

Omobayo was officially sworn in as Deputy Governor of Edo State on Monday by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa.

Shaibu’s impeachment by the House of Assembly followed the adoption of the report submitted by the Justice S. A. Omonua (rtd)-led impeachment panel. The panel, appointed by the Chief Judge of Edo State, investigated allegations of misconduct and perjury against Shaibu.

In its report, the panel found Shaibu guilty of leaking government official secrets, though he was not found guilty of perjury. Eighteen out of the 20 lawmakers present at the plenary on Monday voted in favour of the impeachment, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

Omobayo, a seasoned Engineer with a commendable track record in the oil and gas sector, was sworn in to replace Shaibu shortly after the impeachment proceedings.

Born on July 19, 1986, Omobayo hails from Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the State.

With a B.Eng Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an MSc in Public Administration from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Omobayo brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. He is a registered member of both the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Prior to his appointment, Omobayo served as a Senior Maintenance Engineer in Dresser Wayne West Africa Limited, demonstrating his commitment to excellence in the South South region. He has also actively engaged in local politics, earning the trust of his community and championing common causes.
