Four people were killed in a shooting near a mosque in Muscat, Oman’s capital, according to a statement by the country’s police on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the al-Wadi al-Kabir area, and a number of people were also injured.
Police officers responded to the scene, and an investigation is now underway. Although details remain scarce, some reports suggest that at least one gunman opened fire with an assault rifle.
“All security measures have been put in place to deal with the situation, and procedures for collecting evidence are being completed as part of the investigation,” the police statement said.
Violence of this nature is uncommon in Oman, a strategically located country at the mouth of the Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula, which has a predominantly Muslim population.
