#OccupyLekkiTollGate Protesters Granted $262 Bail

A mobile court in the Yaba, Lagos State, on Saturday granted bail to youths earlier arrested by security operatives for protesting against the resumption of operations at the Lekki tollgate.

Thousands of Nigerians continue to criticize the government’s clampdown on citizens who engaged in peaceful protests, with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) describing it as “a disrespect for the fundamental human rights of unarmed citizens”.

Tagged #OccupyLekkiTollGate, demonstrators on Saturday gathered to protest against the decision of the Lagos judicial panel, which directed the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) to resume operations at the tollgate.

Over 30 youths were arrested at the Lekki tollgate, venue of the protest, and arraigned before the mobile court on charges bordering on flouting the Covid-19 protocols on public gatherings, and “breaking an order not to protest”.

The protesters were granted bail in the sum of $262 (N100,000) each, with sureties in like sum.
