Barack Obama discussed a wide range of topics including the November 3 election, gun control and Obamacare in an interview with Oprah Winfrey as he promotes his new memoir ‘A Promised Land’, due out Tuesday.
The former US President told Oprah he was “thrilled” that Joe Biden won the presidential election and said he’s hopeful that the President-elect and Vice President-elect Harris will be productive even with a Republican-controlled senate.
He also said he doesn’t see a basis for the Supreme Court to strike down the Affordable Care Act as the high court deliberates over its constitutionality.
On the meaning of the title of his memoir, he said he believes “there is a promised land out there”.
“The stakes of making America work are not just important for Americans, but for the world. We are occupying a planet that is shrinking as the consequence of telecommunication and instant travel and inner-connectiveness. And if people who are the surface different… If folks cannot learn to see each other and respect each other and work together and govern themselves, then we will perish.”
The 768-page memoir chronicles the future president’s childhood and political rise, before diving deeply into his historic 2008 campaign and first four years in office.
Obama dedicates hundreds of pages to the fights and characters that colored his tenure, from his work to pass Obamacare in 2010 to the complexities of dealing with a slate of world leaders and finally his decision to approve the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.
He also directly confronts the racist politics of President Donald Trump in the post-presidency memoir.
The interview is a part of the series “The Oprah Conversation” on Apple +.
