The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has formally demanded a public apology and retraction from Amnesty International regarding a publication titled “Bloody August: Nigeria Government’s Violent Crackdown on End Bad Governance Protests.”
The demand was conveyed in a letter dated 6th January 2025, addressing what the NPF described as false and unsubstantiated allegations against its personnel.
The publication accused the NPF of human rights violations, police brutality, and excessive violence during the August 2024 “End Bad Governance” protests. However, the NPF has categorically denied these claims, asserting that they are baseless and lack credible evidence.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF emphasised that its officers maintained professionalism and restraint throughout the protests, even when faced with provocation and violent attacks. The statement further highlighted that the use of force was minimal and strictly in line with global best practices.
The NPF also provided evidence, including national media coverage, to support its position that officers worked diligently to maintain law and order while protecting peaceful protesters. Criminal elements who sought to exploit the protests for unlawful activities were apprehended and dealt with according to the law.
The NPF expressed concern that Amnesty International’s report undermines public trust and confidence in the Force, which it has worked tirelessly to build. The statement noted that the allegations not only damage the organisation’s reputation but also demoralise officers who put their lives at risk daily to ensure public safety.
The NPF has given Amnesty International seven days to issue a formal retraction and public apology. Failure to comply will prompt the Force to explore legal action to defend its reputation.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its dedication to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians, upholding the rule of law, and fostering public trust. The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.
