South Korea will face “devastating consequences” for dropping anti-Pyongyang leaflets over North Korea, state media KCNA reported on Tuesday, citing Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
According to Kim Yo Jong, at least 29 large balloons carrying anti-Pyongyang leaflets from South Korea were discovered around North Korea, leading to blockades in affected areas and causing inconvenience to residents.
Tensions escalated last month when North Korea sent thousands of balloons filled with trash to the South in retaliation against a campaign by North Korean defectors and activists in South Korea. These activists have long flown aid parcels and leaflets criticising the Kim regime across the heavily fortified border.
Kim Yo Jong warned that Pyongyang might respond differently if what she described as “petty and dirty” actions by “human scum” continued, though she did not provide specifics.
In a statement carried by the KCNA, she said, “The situation seemed to be becoming unacceptable. Again I give you a stern warning, you will have to face devastating and horrible consequences.”
