Electoral Bill Amendment: Buhari Withholding Assent is Unreasonable

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s rejection of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, all eyes will now be diverted to the National Assembly to override his veto. But only a few are confident that Nigeria’s rubber stamp legislature, led by Dr Ahmad Lawan, can muster the two-thirds majority required in both Houses to override the president.

Weighing in on the issue Monday, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State said the National Assembly lacked the temerity to overturn the presidential veto. Giving reasons for his verdict, Wike explained that it was part of the scheming of the ruling All Progressives Congress to deny Nigerians free and fair elections in 2023.
