Francis Enobore, Former National PRO Nigerian Correctional Centre (NCS) has said that the prison system does not provide separate apartments for inmates, emphasizing that a thorough classification procedure is conducted upon entry to ensure the safety of all individuals and to facilitate humane custody and rehabilitation.

The Federal Government had suspended multiple senior officials of the NCS bribery allegations linked to the controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky.

The crossdresser allegedly paid several million naira to secure a preferred accommodation in prison, however, he has denied these claims. Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the NCS have launched investigations into the allegations made by a blogger.

In an interview with ARISE NEWS, Enobore stated that separate apartments do not exist within the prison system. He explained that during the classification procedure, inmates are profiled upon entry to ensure their safety and that of the overall prison environment. This process involves understanding their backgrounds to enable humane custody and, for convicts, to facilitate their rehabilitation and reform.

He stated, “I have never heard of any such arrangement to collect money from an inmate and keep him or her out of the prison to a place that is not designated by the trial court.”

Enobore emphasized that there is no special treatment for inmates, explaining, “We classify individuals before starting their treatment.” He gave an example that a bank executive or former governor will most likely not be grouped with armed robbers and similar offenders.

“What you’ll find at the end of the day will be a security situation that you never expected,” he added.

Speaking on the case of Idris, he said, “I’m a little careful not to be preemptive of what the investigation panel will come up with.”

He warned that if precautions are not taken, significant security issues could arise due to the presence of the Nigerian crossdresser, who despite identifying as male, presents a feminine appearance. This could lead to potential security challenges in interactions between Idris and other male inmates.
