No Ransom Was Paid For Release of 20 Medical Students, Nigeria Police Say

The hierarchy of the Nigeria Police Force on Saturday said that no kobo was paid for the release of the 20 medical students abducted by bandits in Gboko area of Benue State, while on transit to Enugu State for Catholic Medical Students Conference.

A statement by Police Spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed that the students alongside other captives were rescue by a joint operations of the police tactical team and other security agencies in Ntunkon forest, Benue State. He insisted that the medical students were rescued tactically and professionally.

Adejobi also applauded the effort and dexterity of the security agencies, locals, and Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), for their commitment and resilience.

According to him, “We confirm the release of our brothers and sisters and some other Nigerians who have been in captivity on Friday 23rd August 2024 in Ntunkon forest, Benue State. Without any ransom paid. Contrary to some tweets and unconfirmed stories that some money was paid, no kobo was paid to release them. They were actually rescued tactically and professionally. We commend the security agencies, locals, and ONSA for their commitment and resilience”.

In a related development, the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), in a well-coordinated and discreet operation, apprehended Bristol Isaac Tamunobiefiri, also known as PIDOM, over allegations bothering on undermining the integrity of government operations.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Saturday, disclosed that Tamunobiefiri was picked up in his hotel room, in Rivers State on the first week of this month.

He said: “There are several allegations levelled against the suspect, including unlawful possession, leakages of classified documents, cyber related offences, and others. We will do due diligence in carrying out thorough investigation into the cases”.

The force, Adejobi said will leave no stone unturned to continually enforce the law and bequeath to Nigerians a more secured nation.

  • No ransom was paid to secure the release of the 20 kidnappees?! really?! So, what must have motivated the Damascene conversion of the kidnappers who were ostensibly looking to make bountiful profit from the ransom they expect would be paid on their victims; more so, after they must have spent so much time, energy and money on planning and execution of the kidnap project. Besides the fact that the Police story sounds too neat to be true, and whereas, no rational mind would take such risk as engaging in kidnapping, just for the fun of it; in the past, we have seen cases of such “rescue” operations, where the security agencies have claimed that no ransom was paid, only for the relatives of the kidnappees to contradict the Police afterwards.
And, for a Police Force, who had in the past often helplessly resorted to paying ransom to retrieve their own from the claws of kidnappers; it does not stand to reason that such an organisation does possess the tactical and professional acumen to rescue others, when she cannot as much as rescue her own.

Methinks the Police should tell us another story.
