Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Reopens After Allied Air Cargo Aircraft Crash-Lands at Airport

At least 5 persons have escaped unhurt as an Allied Air Cargo aircraft with registration number 5N-JRT skidded off Runway 22 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, prompting a temporary shutdown of the airport.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident, which occurred at 10:05 a.m. today with all passengers safely evacuated without injury.

Information from the National Safety Investigation Bureau says the airport has now been reopened for business.

The Allied Air cargo plane crash-landed at the NAIA, following a failure in one of its landing gears, according to reports.

The aircraft, registered as 5N-JRT, made the emergency landing on Wednesday around 10:00 am, carrying six crew members.

The Cable reported that an informed source revealed that “no casualties were recorded.

“The crew members were promptly evacuated and are currently undergoing medical assessments at the 063 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) medical unit.

“Emergency responders acted swiftly to secure the crash site, cordoning off the area under the supervision of the Military Airport Commandant (MAC) and other relevant agencies.”

According to the source, the airport’s runway has been temporarily closed, causing delays for incoming and outgoing flights.

Airport officials, along with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), are working to remove the aircraft and assess the runway for any damage, sources say.

This incident occurred roughly three months after a helicopter crash in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state, which resulted in three fatalities.
