Nineteen individuals lost their lives and six others were injured when a bus crashed on a highway in Mexico’s central state of Zacatecas on Saturday, as reported by local authorities.
The tragic accident occurred in the early hours of the morning when the bus, transporting the victims, collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer carrying corn that had come loose.
Zacatecas Governor David Monreal initially reported a preliminary death toll of 24, but this figure was later revised by the state attorney general’s office, which confirmed 19 fatalities in a statement.
The attorney general’s office indicated that it is “carrying out investigations to arrest the driver” of the tractor-trailer involved in the incident.
Recovery efforts continued throughout Saturday morning, with local officials stating that some bodies had fallen into a ravine. A local government representative, who requested anonymity, informed Reuters that rescue teams, including military personnel, were on the scene securing the area as they worked to recover the bodies.
The bus was en route to Ciudad Juarez, a city located on the U.S.-Mexico border in the state of Chihuahua. According to the attorney general’s office, none of the victims were migrants.
