Nigeria’s Current Constitutional Amendment a Waste of Time, Says Former Health Insurance Boss

A Nigerian professor and former chief executive of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS),  Usman Yusuf, has described the constitutional amendment process currently embarked on by the country’s legislature as a “colossal waste of time and money” and called on lawmakers to make use of documents of previous national conferences to facilitate the amendment.

Yusuf, a Professor of haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation spoke on ARISE NEWS and accused Nigerian lawmakers of intentionally expending billions of Naira in the constitutional amendment process with the knowledge that the process will amount to nothing.

“The exercise they are embarking on in the National Assembly is a colossal waste of time and money and they know it. They have done it several times and they are going to spend a billion Naira to do the same.

“There are documents they can use as templates, so if you ask me, the National Assembly should be more serious than it is. They should look at documents of conferences organised by former Presidents Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, and Jonathan and bring people to look at the issues Nigerians have been talking about,” Prof. Yusuf said.

He believes the biggest fault line in Nigeria’s northern region is insecurity and advocated for forest rangers to tackle bandits and guard the vast forests in the region.

“There are issues and the biggest fault line for us in the north is insecurity. I have advocated for forest rangers because all these bandits we are talking about are in the forests.

“If a nation does not control its forests, its airways, and waterways, then its national security implication is massive,” he said.
