Nigerians Continue Protests against Police Brutality Despite SARS Ban, Demand President Buhari’s Intervention

Nigerians on Monday continued nationwide protests demanding an end to police brutality, a day after the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu banned rogue unit Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS).

Protesters who spoke to Arise News in Lekki, Lagos took exception to the IGP addressing the nation.

“We voted for President Buhari,” said one of them. “Why can’t he address is himself?”

On Sunday hundreds of protesters had converged on the grounds of the ever busy Lekki Tollgate and ground it to a halt.

Chanting protest songs, they declared compulsory holiday for all Lagos residents, hence the blockade on roads.

The traffic snarl that ensued from the blockade spread to both sides of the Lekki Tollgate, spilling over to different parts of Lagos.

Not just were cars stuck in the traffic gridlock, commuters and pedestrians alike were stranded, a move that forced some of them to join the protests.

While most motorists made their way to the alternative route, the huge flow of traffic soon became an albatross.

There were protest in different parts of Lagos, as well as in London and New York.

A protest was also led in Abuja by hip-hop star Davido, hours after the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu announced the ban on the derided Police unit.
