The Nigerian Senate has postponed questioning military chiefs over insecurity until February 13, 2024, to allow for the participation of all those involved in national security management.
The Senate had to postpone the security chiefs’ scheduled speech to the lawmakers about the country’s increasing level of insecurity because of the decision to expand the briefing.
The Senate’s minority leader, Senator Abba Moro, backed the motion made by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to postpone the security briefing by the military chiefs.
While approving the adjournment, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the Senate would want to have a comprehensive discussion on insecurity.
Subsequently, the Senate clerk was instructed to include all Service Chiefs on the invitation list consisting of the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Interior, the Minister of Defence, the Minister of State for Defence, and the National Security Advisor.
In response to the nationwide wave of insecurity, the Senate called an extraordinary session on January 30, the first legislative day of the year, and unanimously decided to call the service chiefs.
Among the service chiefs in attendance for Wednesday’s briefing were the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, and the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
