All 774 local government areas (LGAs) across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) received a total net statutory allocation of N1.69 trillion from the federal account allocation committee (FAAC) in the first half of 2024, according to data from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Analysis revealed that Lagos State’s 20 LGAs received the highest FAAC revenues compared to others. Alimosho LGA topped the list with N11.13 billion, making it the highest recipient among the 774 local councils. Ajeromi/Ifelodun LGA followed with N8.90 billion, and Kosofe LGA received N8.80 billion during the same period.
Other top beneficiaries included Mushin with N8.69 billion, Oshodi/Isolo with N8.66 billion, Ojo with N8.58 billion, Ikorodu with N8.41 billion, and Surulere with N8.24 billion.
In contrast, Ifedayo LGA in Osun State received the lowest allocation at N1.30 billion. It was followed by Ilejemeji in Ekiti, which received N1.38 billion, and Bakassi in Cross River, which got N1.39 billion. Other low earners included Remo North and Ewekoro in Ogun, with N1.42 billion and N1.43 billion, respectively. Atakumosa East and Ila, both in Osun, each received N1.43 billion.
On July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government must directly disburse allocations to LGAs from the federation account. The court criticized states for creating and controlling caretaker committees, emphasizing that LGAs should be democratically elected as mandated by the constitution. The federal government was also ordered to withhold allocations to LGAs governed by unelected officials appointed by governors.
