The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared an imminent nationwide strike commencing on Monday, June 3rd, 2024.
This decision stems from the failure of the tripartite committee to reach a consensus on a new minimum wage.
The announcement came during a joint press conference in Abuja on Friday, led by the President of TUC, Festus Osifo, alongside NLC leadership.
The organised Labour expressed their dissatisfaction with the prolonged negotiations and the government’s inability to meet their demands.
The Labour leaders cited the expiration of an earlier request to the Federal Government to finalise negotiations for a new minimum wage before the end of May as a reason for their action.
This strike threat marks a significant escalation in tensions between the labour unions and the government.
Notably, organised labour had previously withdrawn from negotiations and rejected two offers from the Federal Government, with the latest proposal amounting to N60,000.
