Followers of Yoruba nation separatist agitator Sunday Adeyemo better known as Sunday Igboho are protesting on the streets of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital the recent raid by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) of the residence of the now wanted activist.
Reports suggest that the demonstrators had gathered in front of Igboho’s house from where they took to the streets around midday on Wednesday.
Chants such as “no retreat, no surrender!”, “Oodua Nation!”, “Sunday Igboho is not a criminal!” amongst other phrases were heard from the protesters.
Some others carried placards several write ups such as: “Who killed Awolowo? Fulani, Who killed Abiola? Fulani, Who killed Bola Ige? Fulani Who killed Dele Giwa? Fulani”
Local media reports that the protesters marched to the palace of a revered traditional ruler in the southwestern region, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji; and from there proceeded to the Government House.
“It is a peaceful demonstration; we are marching there to demand the release of the detained persons. We are not afraid of teargas, we are marching to demand the rights of our people,” a leader of the demonstrators said.
He continued: “We want them to bring the killers of Adogan and Alfa to book.
“The government must pay the N500 million damages as requested by Igboho’s lawyer for the destruction of his house and property during the invasion.
“We want the Obas to make this happen within seven days.”
The DSS had raided Igboho’s residence as reported by ARISE News around 1am on Thursday. While Igboho had escaped the raid, the DSS operatives riddled his house and cars with bullets while bloodstains splattered over the floors of the house.
Two of his associates were also killed in a gun duel. Thirteen of his guards and close associates were later paraded in Abuja same day.
He has since been declared wanted by the DSS and accused of stockpiling weapons to destabilize the country.
