Nigeria Warns Citizens in UK to Remain Vigilant Amidst Rising Violence, Anti-Immigrant Sentiment

The Nigerian federal government has issued a warning to its citizens living in the United Kingdom, advising them to be “extra vigilant” due to an increased risk of violence.

This caution follows a series of escalated demonstrations across several UK cities, triggered by a knife attack at a school in Southport that resulted in the deaths of three children.

The attack occurred on July 29 during a Taylor Swift event at a dance school. In addition to the fatalities, eight other children were injured in the stabbing incident. The violence that ensued was marked by riots the following day, with a large crowd gathering outside a mosque, where they hurled bottles and bricks at police vans.

The unrest was exacerbated by misinformation alleging that the attacker was an immigrant and a radical Islamist. This false narrative fueled anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment, further intensifying the demonstrations.

In response to the escalating violence, Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued a statement on Sunday. Abu-Obe described the situation as having reached “dangerous proportions,” noting that the murder of the children had sparked an anti-immigration narrative, particularly targeting Muslim immigrants and people of color.

The statement included specific safety recommendations for Nigerian citizens in the UK: they are advised to avoid participating in political processions, protests, rallies, or marches, and to steer clear of crowded areas and large gatherings. Citizens were also encouraged to remain vigilant and self-aware at all times.

For those with relevant information, the federal government has urged individuals to contact the Nigerian High Commission via email at hc@nigeriahc.org.uk or by phone at +442078391244.
