Popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi was on Thursday Grilled and interrogated for two hours by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS), ARISE News can confirm.
The Sheikh was released on administrative bail after the northwestern Kaduna State division of the DSS got clearance from the secret police’s headquarters in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
Gumi’s arrest and interrogation occurred a day after he featured in an explosive interview on Arise News’ Morning Show where he claimed that terrorists in the country get the cooperation of some bad elements within Nigeria’s military.
A source who’s very familiar with his arrest told ARISE News on Friday that the Sheikh was actually “invited and interrogated in Kaduna office on Thursday from 3pm to 5pm”.
The senior official told ARISE News that the operation “was quietly done” and most staff were not aware of the development.
“He was brought in a ramshackle vehicle and he was taken into the DSS boss’ office here in Kaduna. He was released on administrative bail after two hours and after clearing from the DSS headquarters in Abuja.”
In his Wednesday interview on ARISE News the Sheikh had said, “these bandits, if you don’t know, are cooperating with a lot of bad elements in our security system. This is a business. So many people are involved, you’ll be so surprised”.
“They were caught in Zamfara; they were caught everywhere, how do these big weapons cross our borders? How can these big weapons cross our borders and get into the forest without the cooperation of some bad element of the security operatives assisting them? It’s not possible. If I give you the same amount of guns can you take it to the UK? You can’t because the security is alert,” he added.
The Nigerian army has since debunked the claims but said “it must be stated unambiguously that it will not condone any form of sabotage or aiding and assisting the enemy by any personnel.”
