Nigeria: Senate Begins Investigation into Code of Conduct Chairman Umar’s Assault on Security Guard

The Nigerian Senate has ordered an investigation into the physical assault by the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, on a security guard, Clement Sagwak.

The President of the Senate has ordered the Senate’s Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions headed by Senator Ayo Akinyelure to investigate the matter and report back in four weeks.

Umar was caught on video at Banex Plaza, in the Wuse area of Abuja, and appeared to hit a security guard who had told him his vehicle was parked in the wrong space.

Mr Sagwak, the security guard, petitioned the senate through his senator, Istifanus Gyang, representing Plateau north senatorial district and demanding a probe into the incident that took place in March.

Reading the petition before the Senate on Tuesday, Gyang said Sagwak was seeking justice for the assault he suffered in the cause of carrying out his duty.

Gyang said the petitioner alleged that the CCT chairman assaulted him, asked him to kneel down and also slapped him.

The petition before the senate is one of the many probes Mr Umar will face over his conduct.

Mr Sagwak had through his lawyer, Samuel Ihensekhien petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), asking for a probe of Mr Umar’s action, accusing the CCT chairman of abuse of power, assault, and torture.
