The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the arrest of two suspected political thugs during overnight raids in Edo State, coinciding with the commencement of the governorship election in the region.

The arrests, made following a tip-off, mark a significant step in the police’s efforts to combat electoral violence.

In a statement released on Saturday, NPF spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi detailed the arrests of Edwin Obanor, 43, and Audu Tajudeen, 41, identified as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from Ugbogbo quarters, Igara Akoko. During searches of the suspects’ belongings, police uncovered three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols in Obanor’s possession and one locally made gun from Tajudeen.

Adejobi stated, “These arrests are a testament to the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

“The police and other supporting security agencies will not tolerate any form of violence or disorderliness during the election in Edo State.

“The suspects are currently in custody and will face the full weight of the law.

“The police reassure the public of its dedication to protecting lives and property and, therefore, urges citizens to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via our published helplines.”

As the election unfolds, 17 political parties are competing for the votes of approximately 2.2 million electorates in Edo State, highlighting the importance of a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
